CNY traditions

Two things - one this is fast turning into a food blog, ugh. Two, if Jewish ppl get their NYE off, why don't Chinese ppl? Oh thats right, we are spineless and passive, double ugh.

HOWEVER, CNY is not CNY until you sit around eating hot pot and have the traditional sponge cake for desert! There are many superstitions associated with the making of the sponge cake, the main one being, depending on the way it "explodes" in the steamer, it'll tell you how well or how poorly your family will do this year. Whatever, the stuff is legendary and finally now, no matter where I spend my CNY, I'll be able to make my own. Here is the recipe!

Ingredients:
1. 2 Eggs
2. brown sugar 3/4 cup OR 1/2 cup if you want less sweet
3. milk 250c.c. (1 cup)
4. Glutinous Rice Flour 1/2 cup
5. Self Raising Flour 1.5 cup

Instructions:
1. mix the egg and brown sugar until smooth
2. add milk, self raising flour, and glutinous rice flour & mix until smooth
*Mum likes to add a dash of cinnamon...well not really a dash, but you get the idea!
3. pour into cup cake paper until it reaches the top ridge
**Also, mum is super superstitious about this so she insists on using our daily soup bowls as the shaper/container but don't really have to. Just use whatever.
4. add 3.5 cups of HOT water into rice cooker to cook (this last step depends on the steaming equipment, but just remember to use hot water!)
